Jenkins has experience in consulting engineering, project management, property development planning and management for both private and public companies involved in engineering construction and property development. In 1989 he held the position of Development Manager for Whiteholme Developments (subsidiary of a public company) which had a AU$ 300M property portfolio, and in 1991 he was a development consultant for publicly listed Turner Corporation in Sydney. His  experience covers all facets of property development ranging from small to large projects encompassing retail, commercial, residential and hotel projects and he has many valuable local and overseas business contacts. He has formed business relationships with business people in Australia, United States of America, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Peoples' Republic of China, is a member of the Export Institute of New Zealand, a past committee member of the New Zealand - Malaysia Business Council, a past member of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and the Wellington Property Investors Association. He is a committee member of the Thorndon Tennis & Squash Club, Joint Vice President of the Wellington Watercolour Society, a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Art Society of New South Wales, and the Olympic Harrier Club.
